Concert

With ‘Triplex’, the Laterna Magica trio offers a varied repertoire from the 14th to the end of the 18th century, with the transcription process that is the trademark of the Laterna Magica ensemble as the common thread. It includes three excerpts from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, a collection of 14th-century sacred songs that bear witness to the transition between monophonic and polyphonic forms, two excerpts from the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, an English collection of pieces for the virginal, an instrument of the harpsichord family. This was followed by two lute pieces by John Dowland, two pieces by Buxtehude, three three-part keyboard sinfonias by J.S. Bach and his magnificent chaconne for solo violin BWV 1004.  Finally, the trio will perform transcriptions of arias from Mozart's operas for three czakans, inspired by those of Klingenbrunner for two czakans, published in 1807.

This programme is an opportunity to hear two rarely played instruments: the gemshorn and the czakan. The gemstone horn is an instrument that appeared at the end of the Middle Ages and was used until the end of the Renaissance, carved from the horn of an animal (ox, chamois, goat, etc.). The czakan appeared around 1800. It was Anton Heberle who, inspired by the flutes of Hungarian shepherds, added keys to it and incorporated the flute into a walking stick. In this way, he transformed the pastoral instrument into a concert instrument that was all the rage in the Austro-Hungarian salons of the early 19th century. A repertoire of more than 500 original works has been dedicated to him, as well as transcriptions.
